"Martvitsata" protected area
Aims of the declaration: Protection the habitat of white water lily. (https://eea.government.bg/zpo/en/area.j ... &areaID=43)
The area has been declared protected by Order No. 155 / 11.004.1978 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications under the Ministry of Internal Affairs in order to preserve the only natural site of white water lily /Nymphaea alba/ along the river Maritsa and in the interior of the country. It is located on the land in the village of Popovitsa, Municipality of Sadovo, with a total area of 1.0 ha. The territory is managed and guarded by the Town Hall of the village of Popovitsa under the control of Regional Environment and Water Inspection Plovdiv. (https://plovdiv.riosv.com/main.php?modu ... &inf_id=14)
"During an earthquake on April 18, 1928, the ground opened up and a lake appeared in the place of the stream next to the village of Popovitsa. It is called the "Dead Lake", it is also popularly known as the dead lake because it is believed to have formed from the folding of the earth and the water in it is dead. In 1978 it was declared a reserve. There you can see white water lilies and white poplars.
For the period 1996-1997, the project "Conservation and educational activity in the protected area "Mortvitsa" was implemented, financed by the Regional Ecological Center. The purpose of this project is the preservation, reproduction and resettlement of rare and endangered marsh plants." (https://www.plovdiv24.bg/novini/interes ... ero-752797)
