EE BS with transmitter - Timmu, Nurme + Kuremari

Post by marika.solo »

Hello everyone :-)

Urmas answered my questions about Nurme, Timmu and Kuremari:

NURME
1/ Nurme does not have mate, most probably. At least, nests he visited often after returning from migration are not visited any more so much. Rather not at all. Think Nurme stays alone this season again, like Kergu.

TIMMU
2/ We do not know about nesting of Timmu. In the end of June we will go to check. Timmus transmitter is not working since reached breeding grounds, data are behind in wintering site. But we put some fish in basket and Timmu visited that place, transmitter visible on back. So once we try to trap Timmu and remove transmitter (or replace, if we have on by that time).

KERGU
3/ Btw, Kergu visited yesterday the nest nearly 50 km away. We do not know if there is breeding this year.

KUREMARI
4/ Kuremari is in Latvia and Maris Strazds is following her movements, two days ago he wrote that Kuremari has visited at least one known nest, but probably more of those Maris doesn't know. Maris wants to go and check there on Kuremaris track several places, but timing is not good at the moment (possible incubation).

TIMMU

Hello.

Yesterday I had the chance to visit Timmu's nest. Unfortunately there is no active nesting this year, however, there were 3 broken eggs in the nest.
So this means that breeding began but was stopped by some kind of disturbance that made the adults to abandon the eggs. It seemed that the eggs were later predated by ravens.

TIMMU

More information from this season:

A strange unringed male arrived on Timmu's nest in the early morning of 28th march. Timmu arrived on the same day afternoon. The stranger was no more seen and Timmu remained alone.
The camera on the nest stopped capturing images on April 6th due to a full memory card. Timmu was still single then. (Female arrived some time later and unfortunately we can't know what caused the failure of this year's breeding)

Urmas (May 14)

NURME does not have mate, most probably. At least, nests he visited often after returning form migration are not visited any more so much. Rather not at all. Think Nurme stays alone this season again, like Kergu.

Urmas (June 24)

NURME behaves quite similarly to last years, no partner seems to be with Nurme.

TIMMU visited our fish basket rarely this year. Nest check is planned in two days, after that we know more. I think Madli will join us for nest control?
(marika: see report by Madli in previus post)

KERGU still visits wind park area, where building up of wind turbines is going on at the moment.

Hello.
I have some news of a new stork who got a transmitter this year in Pärnu county, Estonia.

Trail camera revealed that one adult unringed stork visited one feeding place. So there was an oportunity to catch this stork.

Unfortunately, on closer inspection, a deep wound was discovered on this bird's left side. Urmas and Raivo could only provide some essential first aid at that time and release the stork.

By measurements, it's possibly a female. And she got an unusual nickname- Trauma ( )
At the moment she doesn't move very far, but stays close to the fish basket. She needs more energy and strength to heal this wound and hopefully start migration.

Fingers crossed for her recovery!

Hello everyone :-)

former Eedi's nest

... there are again 3 chicks in former Eedi's nest, where Metsoja grew up last year. The adult stork uses the same feeding areas. Urmas plans to ring these storklets, but maybe not give transmitter to a juvenile this year.

information shared by our Madli - thank you :D

KUREMARI

May 17
email by Dr. Māris Strazds

Kuremari is hanging around just as non-breeding (yet) females seems to do (obviously that's their way how to find future partner and/or nest). I have intention to check those sites where some unknown nests might be. Checking her data poit by point, 9 potentioal nests identified so far. Will let you know if any will appear real :)

May 28
email by Dr. Māris Strazds

Checked some 10 possible locations. One nest visited, others were foraging spots in forest.

Kuremari did what females of her age obviously do – she spent all the time in the world she had to explore quite an extensive range. I have processed some 10 days or so, intend to do the rest too. Will send you some summary when it will be done.
