JANIS (2018, Latvia) - adult bird

Post by marika.solo »

the autumn birdmap starts with data from August 15
The spring/summer migration stops in mid-August and the autumn/winter migration continues from the following day, the 15th = the bird map is set for autumn/winter migration and the new distance measurement starts from 15.08. However, the birdmap is sometimes ready a week or two later.

in this thread we follow JANIS (hatched 2018) adult bird from Latvia (we follow Jani's 1st autumn-winter migration with trasmitter)

JANIS colour ring number: - 8 CY
(CY = calendar year; birds are aged as the number of calendar years they have lived in, with the year they were born in as the 1st calendar year and increasing past every January 1st.)

August 25

Today, Urmas caught another black stork on the Mustjõgi floodplain and equipped it with a GPS transmitter. This time it was an adult bird with a Latvian aluminium ring. It had already managed to lose its plastic ring. Born in 2018. It was named Janis.
Other details — such as its origin and the ringer's information — will likely be added to the Migration Map by Urmas himself once precise recovery data is received from the ringing centre. For now, only a quick exchange of information took place via phone.
This stork might also be nesting somewhere in Estonia.

August 25/2

The new stork Janis is getting used to the new tracker on its back and only moved a few kilometres from the capture site today.

Tellingumäe's 25-meter-high observation tower offers a beautiful view of the winding Mustjõgi gorges and the hilly landscape typical of South Estonia. Latvia can be seen in the distance, as nearby the Mustjõe River joins the Koiva (Gauja) River on the Estonian-Latvian border. TELLINGUMÄE OBSERVATION TOWER is a great place to observe nature and birds. Several rare bird species can be found here.
