FEEDING

The juveniles learn to search for foraging sites and acquire food only after their definitive departure from the nest (migration).

13:06 @reniaS06 13.05.16 przylot Mieszka (13:05:16 MIESZKO's arrival)
Na gniezdzie pojawił się Ziemowit, czekał (Ziemowit appeared on the nest and waited)
You can't see how much Mieszko lost, but it took the youngster a while to eat it, so there was a lot of it)

13:16 @wiesia-R 13.04.43 przylot Ziemowita z gałęzi, bo tam ćwierkał (13:04:43 Ziemowit's arrival from the branch, because he was chirping there) - 13.05.16 przylot Mieszka i karmienie (13:05:16 Mieszko arriving and feeding) - 13.05.26 odlot M (13:05:26 departure M)

13:24 PM@PtakiBirds Chyba żaby były? (I think there were frogs?) - 13:28 @reniaS06 Pewnie żaby (Probably frogs)

14:41 @IzabelaHanna 14.36.26. zaczął ćwierkać (14:36:26. he started chirping) - 14:42 @wiesia-R 14.41.59 BAWARKA - 14:42 @wiesia-R Zaba na żabie (frogs, frogs) - 14:48 @wiesia-R 14.42.14 odlot B (14:42:14 departure B)

youtube chat info - thx to everyone - wielkie dzięki za Wasze raporty :D

male Mieszko - female Bawarka
Chicks:
Wanda: ringed with a white colour-ring 1FT4 (no logger).
Ziemowit & Oda: both equipped with leg-transmitters (loggers).

NEST ACTIVITY LOG 23/07/2026 (in the evening - the whole day)
Log compiled from chat observations and structured with the assistance of Gemini AI.

05:56 – 06:33 — Only one fledgeling (Ziemowit with leg transmitter) is present in the nest. No parents visit during the early morning.
07:58 — The fledgeling gets soaked in the rain; water accumulates in the nest basin.
08:32 — The fledgeling departs from the nest despite the ongoing rain.

13:04 — The fledgeling returns from a nearby tree branch, chirping loudly as it spots an incoming adult.
13:05 — First Feeding (Male): The male parent arrives and delivers a generous portion of food. The fledgeling eats eagerly, leaving no food behind.
13:05 — The male parent departs.

14:36 — The fledgeling starts calling/chirping again as a parent approaches.
14:41 — Second Feeding (Female): The female parent arrives and regurgitates a large quantity of frogs. The fledgeling feeds until completely satiated, leaving crumbs in the nest.
14:42 — The female parent departs.

16:54 — Third Feeding (Male): The male parent arrives and delivers another substantial feeding consisting of numerous large frogs.
16:54 — The male parent departs immediately after feeding.

18:18 — The fledgeling exercises its wings and reacts to a live frog moving in the nest.
19:37 – Evening — The fledgeling remains alert in the nest, preening and resting in improving weather conditions.

--------------------------
Parental Foraging Strategy in Adverse Weather:
Adult black storks generally avoid foraging flights during heavy rain to prevent their plumage from becoming waterlogged. However, amphibian activity increases significantly immediately after rain, enabling the adults to catch and deliver large quantities of frogs in quick succession.

Post-Fledging Dependence & Survival Risks:
Fledgelings do not become independent immediately after their maiden flights. They continue to rely on parental feedings at the nest for 2–3 weeks to build up essential fat reserves.Maiden flights typically occur at around 65 days of age (range: 60–73 days), whereas final departure for migration occurs at an average of 87 days (range: 73–108 days). If a young stork is displaced or flushes from the nest prematurely, its chances of survival drop significantly. Without food and hydration, a fledgeling's physical condition degrades severely within 48 to 72 hours, hindering its ability to fly or learn to forage.

Telemetry Ring Readouts:
Electronic rings equipped with short-range loggers upload location data only when within close proximity (approx 200 m) of an active mobile network device (anyone with a mobile phone).

Local foresters conducted searches in nearby meadows to monitor the birds' presence.

Ziemowit:
Nie było go w kadru od wylotu 21.06 o 10:20. Wrócił do gniazda 22.07 o 19:08, (karmienie Bawarka), przenocował i odleciał dzisiaj (23.07) w deszczu o 08:32.
Oda:
Wanda (1FT4 ):
22.07 o 11:28 i Mieszko ją nakarmił.

I have sent an email to Mr. Dariusz Anderwald requesting transmitter data for Ziemowit and Oda, as well as asking for his opinion on Wanda's situation.

A brief summary of what we observed on the camera:

Ziemowit:
Had been out of the camera frame since leaving on June 21 at 10:20. He returned to the nest on July 22 at 19:08, (feeding by Bawarka)spent the night, and took off today (July 23) in the rain at 08:32.
Oda:
Took off for what was likely her maiden flight on July 21 at 10:41 and has not returned since.
Wanda (1FT4):
On July 22 at 11:28, Mieszko fed her. At 12:39, she was observed deterring a predator, after which she flew off in a great hurry and has not been seen since.

Dr. Anderwald answered to me (via email):

date: Jul 23, 2026, 10:25 AM

To nowy pilotażowy produkt jednej z polskich firm. Dlatego musimy uzbroić się w cierpliwość, żeby wiedzieć coś więcej. Nie znamy losów Wandy ani innych młodych. Może już poleciały po oddaleniu. Zadzwonię do leśniczego, żeby tam zajrzał dyskretnie w okolicach gniazda.
Pozdrawiam
Darek

Hi Marika,
These two storks don't have expensive transmitters based on GPS/GSM technology, but cheap electronic rings that connect to mobile networks only if the birds are within 200 meters of any phone. It's a new pilot product from a Polish company. That's why we need to be patient to find out more. We don't know what happened to Wanda or the other fledglings. Maybe they've already flown away after fledging. I'll call the forester so he can discreetly check the area around the nest.
Best regards,
Darek

(Good morning, forester Krzysztof will be checking the area around the nest. The birds have electronic rings and only connect if there's a phone within 200 meters. Krzysztof will also check the nearby meadows.)

10:40 @komitetochronyoroweaglecon1326
Były w dobrej kondycji, więc czekajmy spokojnie (Besides, it's wet, so the birds might be sitting somewhere and waiting for better weather. They were in good shape, so let's wait patiently.)
