birdmap was set up to spring migration usually on February 15, but on March 1 too

2021 - spring birdmap started on 15.02

TIMMU: first on 05.3.2021 (on the way home)
previous data - autumn birdmap:
- Distance: 8431 km, Last data: 14.02.2021
- from: near tributary streams and the river Athbara (north east from Metemma - a town in northwestern Ethiopia, located in the Semien Gondar Zone of the Amhara Region)
new data - spring birdmap:
- Distance: 526 km, Last data: 02.03.2021 (birdmap update on March 5)
- to: south from Sebdereat, Gash Barka Region, in the south-west of the country Eritrea (above mountains/hill)

KARL II: first on 08.03.2021 (on the way home)
previous data - autumn birdmap:
- Distance 7111, Last: 23.10 .2020
- Sudan, North Kordofan State,
new data - spring birdmap:
- Distance: 1760 km, Last data: 08.03.2021
- Sudan, White Nile state, Ad Douiem district (the newest localisation is not far from Wad Nimr on the west bank of the White Nile)
(data transmission has resumed in Sudan in almost the same area as the last data in the autumn)

I wonder how are they preparing there for a new breeding season? Getting their feathers nice and shiny again

I'm very happy that Skierka is going home: I hope that the cameras are ready to roll!
But Isn't she very early this year? I think that she will reach the nest before the male. Or is that normal time for storks to return to Poland?

it is normal for storks who are wintering in south and west of Europe ... (white storks wintering in Spain are already back on their nest e.g. in Germany and Czech. Rep.)
Skierka will be most probably the first - we will see. Previous season (her first nesting) they noticed both storks on the nest on April 18 https://youtu.be/dTJH4FXuj_w .

One of our black storks has just arrived at the nest. We know about this fact thanks to the camera trap installed at the nest in cooperation with the Forest Experimental Station of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Rogów. Very early, because usually black storks arrive after March 15. If the equipment does not fail, we will observe the development of the situation and inform you about it on a regular basis.

LV, MARE - hafir dam

“Hafir” dams are usually small earthen reservoirs dug into the ground in gently sloping areas that receive runoff either from flood flow diverted from streams or from large catchment areas. Generally, they have a volume ranging from 500-10,000 m3 and are used to store water for human and livestock consumption. Hafirs are located in natural depressions and the excavated soil is used to form an embankment around the reservoir to increase its capacity. Wing walls and improvements to the catchment apron may help to increase runoff into the reservoir, but seepage and evaporation are often high in the dry season."

On April 1, 1906, the International Convention on Bird Protection was signed. World Bird Day is not only anniversary of Convention, but also time when birds return from wintering.

For me, it is a big mystery when even young storks that have never migrated meet at such feeding grounds...
