Karula National Park (Karl II and Kaia)

17.12/13 there must be a stork around because Kaia looks irritated, her neck feathers are puffed. She usually does this before Karl comes to the nest. Maybe Karl is nearby or the stranger...and Kaia can't quite recognize.


17.17 Kaia tucks her head and bill even more inside her neck feathers. A stork (Karl) can be heard calling in the forest, not very far.


17.21 Kaia stands up. And a few seconds later a stork takes off- I can hear the sound and see the shadow move on the trees. It flies to the right. Kaia holds a defensive body posture and looks in that direction. Then she continues with aerating.

17.23 Karl comes back! They both greet eachother.


17.24 Kaia sits back on the eggs.


17.28 Karl flies out. He still has this loose feather on his left wing.

17.37 Kaia hears a loud bang / shot.


17.38 She looks at something and suddenly she tucks her head again..she looks around nervously.


18.39 Kaia suddenly casts a pellet and stands up.

She quickly throws the pieces out of the nest.

18.40 kaia takes a defensive position again, but instead of danger, Karl arrives!
Kaia's incubation shift was 1 h 32 min (after the attack)


Kaia can't stop saying how happy she is to have Karl home..or how sorry is she is for mistaking him to an intruder again...both storks whistle for a long time


18.41 Kaia steps on the curved branch and Karl starts aerating the nest. Kaia steps down and walks back and forth around the nest, same time talking to Karl.

18.42 Karl continues incubation. Kaia kisses him. She walks around the nest and then...Kaia mates with Karl!


18.47 Kaia jumps to her balcony- lower branch.


18.51 We have a little zoom from the camera operator

18.59 Karl takes care of the eggs.


19.32 Karl yawns directly to the camera


19.32 Karl stands up, PS, and normal egg care routine.
19.33 Kaia leaves.
