A worthy initiative for the LK forum
https://www.looduskalender.ee/n/node/6748

Viewers know that the male bird Jan no longer arrived at the nest of the black stork in Jõgeva County. Most likely, the male is killed. The female Janika is unable to feed the chicks alone and cover them at night because the birds under a little two weeks old have not developed thermoregulation. Thus, the Eagle Club decided to take to Madis Leivits to the Animal Clinic of the University of Life Sciences for about ten days.

It is then planned to place the young birds in an artificial nest in the forest, where they can be fed but not trained with humans. We will let you know what such a rare experiment will look like and, if technically possible, we will also receive a webcam transfer.

LK forum opened an account page yesterday to support the business - thanks. It would be nice if viewers of the nature calendar could also find an opportunity to support it. The account opened yesterday afternoon has already received 540.00 euros by noon today.

The support environment is secure and can be found at: https://www.leetchi.com/c/kotkaklubi

The orphaned chicks from the stork camera are recovering in incubator at the ULS (University of Life Sciences)
-Three chicks remain out of six

Last week, the male bird, Jan, disappeared and mother, Jaanika, had to take care of the chicks alone - it is customary in stork families for the father to take care of the food side and the mother is responsible for heating the chicks in the nest.

As the weather was not very warm either, Jaanika's attempt to leave the nest was fatal for the three(?) stork chicks and they died.(not true- two didn't die because of the neglect) "The behavior pattern of the female bird became exceptional. Instead of keeping the chicks warm at night and looking for food in sunny weather, she did the exact opposite," explained Madis Leivits, a veterinarian at the University of Life Sciences, who takes care of the three surviving stork chicks with the help of the Eagle Club.

The three chicks of the stork pair Jan and Jaanika, who became famous in front of the nature camera, were taken to the animal clinic of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, where they are taken care of by Madis Leivits, a veterinarian dedicated to wild animals. Despite the shock caused by the loss of parents at such an early age, birds recover nicely and have the prospect of living their future lives in the wild. Exactly what happened to the missing male bird is still unclear.

"However, considering all the circumstances, the surviving stork chicks are doing quite well. The two largest ones are growing visibly and have already gained more than a hundred grams in a few days. The third, the smallest, is a bit more passive, Leivits described. "Of course, it can't be called great, because a person can't be as good a parent to an animal or a bird as they are to their own.
He added that storklets are fed with a special stork decoy - a tube that resembles a black stork to make it safer for the pups. They mainly have fish on their table.

Black stork differs from white because it finds its food mainly in water - fish, frogs, aquatic, he explained.
The path of the three storklets will probably lead to an artificial nest, where they will be gradually prepared for independent living and the natural environment. Fortunately, they are quite early chicks, they have high hopes for themselves, said Leivits, who said that chicks born later in the second half of the summer tend to be prey for birds of prey and predators. "
Under artificial conditions, we can also feed them strong enough."

I am happy too to see the chicks getting stronger.
I also like the feeding solution :D

I am curious, what will the artificial nest look like and how will they manage to continue feeding without being noticed.

I imagine that the same stork decoy will continue to deliver fish..maybe through some kind of wall..?
Hopefully next time we see the chicks in their new home already, through the camera.

in Rescue Staion Makaov, CZ years ago (2017)

female (permanent resident) did not incubate in the first year of nesting, the eggs were taken to the hatchery

two siblings were successful adopted to two different nest

I saw feeding eagles in "similar" situtaion, the man who went to feed them was in camouflage from head to toe

I am very curious on all detail very much too

finger crossed for "our" storklets very, very much!

Urmas is great! Dr. Madis L. of course too.
