... Experts from the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water - Ruse sent the young black stork (Ciconia nigra) for rehabilitation to the Centre for Breeding and Rehabilitation of Rare Species of the organization "Green Balkans" in the city of Stara Zagora.
- This juvenile black stork was ringed in Lithuania and, according to experts, stork was probably injured during the autumn migration. The rescue centre reports that the bird has an old fracture in its right leg and is suffering from exhaustion. Fingers crossed - good recovery! ...
Unfortunately the bird died the next day after admission. The bird was admitted with an old, open fracture of one leg and low weight and on 25.09.2024 (the next day) it died. After the autopsy it was found that the stork had a heart attack, most likely a result of exhaustion.
Sorry about bad news.

Krasnolipki - Polish Czech
Thanks to the photo traps, we are learning many interesting things about black storks. For example about the directions and distances of dispersal. In the nest near Krasnolipki (SW Poland), a 4-year-old female coming from Czech Republic from the Zlin region (285 km to the S) tried to start a late breeding. Thanks to the white ring 685L she could be identified.
The female from Nedachlebice appeared at the nest in S Greater Poland only on 5 May and stayed with the male for at least 10 days. The nest occupied by the male had already had many strange visitors since 30 March: a starling, a great tit, a hoopoe and an eagle owl. The "Krasnolipki" (male) had another female without rings at the beginning of the season, but it didn't work out for them As we know, young females (Skierka, Titania, Nutka2) rarely manage to have successful broods. Because males settle closer to their places of origin and females return to known nests/males, we keep our fingers crossed for this international pair of storks next year!
