In 2021, we watched the activities of another pair of black storks - Jan and Janika. Probably due to the late arrival of the female, four eggs were laid relatively late 12-18.05. The chicks chated 14-17. June. One of the storlets died on July 12 before being able to fly. We do not know the cause of his death. Just before the flight, the three chicks in the nest were accompanied. In this way, we got an idea of what they were doing even after leaving the nest. Two storklets died before leaving the nest forest. We do not know the exact cause of death, but there are signs of robbery. The third chick flew straight west of the nest to Saaremaa, then across the sea to Gotland, but a strong north wind pushed him too far for a long crossing, so he landed on a passing oil tanker at night. In the morning it turned out that he had chosen the tanker moving in the wrong direction and had been driving more than 200 km north at night. Thus, the next day, both the 200 km voyage and an additional 400 km to the Polish coast had to be made up. Also on this long day's journey, the young black stork took the opportunity to rest on a couple of ships sailing in the Baltic Sea. From the Polish coast, he chose a western migration flyway, flew via Germany and Belgium to France, where the signal of his transmitter disappeared. The future fate of the storklet is unknown to us. Despite the efforts of local bird lovers, no remains of the chick or the transmitter have been found.

Risks of Late Nesting in Black Storks
- Tight Development Window:
Black Storks need approximately 100 days from egg-laying to fledging (35 days incubation + 65 days nestling period). Late chicks will only be ready to fly in late August, leaving them almost no time to train muscles and practice hunting before the long journey to Africa (almost no time to build fat reserves).
- Migration Timing & Parent Abandonment:
This is a major risk. The female's biological clock often triggers her migratory instinct in early to mid-August. If the chicks are still far from being independent, she may leave the nest early, leaving the male alone to provide food. In extreme cases, if the migration urge is too strong, even the male might reduce feeding or leave before the chicks are fully "ready."
- Food Scarcity:
By late summer, many small forest streams and feeding grounds may dry up. Finding enough high-quality protein (fish/frogs) to support the rapid growth of late-born chicks becomes increasingly difficult for the parents.
- Reduced Survival Rates:
Statistically, "late" juveniles have a much lower survival rate during their first migration as they face harsher weather conditions and lack the maturity of those born earlier in the spring.

The hypothetical schedule for the 2026 nesting season:
Egg laying
- 2025: 20 April (7 days after F arrival)
- 2026: 11 May (22 days after the female arrived)
Hatching
- 2025: 11 May (34 days after laying)
- 2026: 15 June (+35 days)
Maiden flight/Fledging
Chicks age at first flights depends on food abundance in previous stages in development. Chicks will be able to fly at the age of 68-72 days, for another 2-4 weeks after being able to fly they will go to the nest at night or rest at the nest.
- 2025: 04 August (72 days old, accidentally)
- 2026: 24 August (+70 days from hatching)
Final Departure / Independence
Better results are in surviving of the chicks which longer time in nest after fledging, means they return to the nest and step by step get independent, but are still getting food
The peak of autumn migration is in Estonia the second half of August.
- 2025: 17 August (13 days from fledging) - 119 days from laying the egg
- 2026: 7 September (+14 days from fledging)

The average age of successful birds when leaving the nest is 83 days. If there is food and conditions, then the male usually feeds the chicks until the last one. The female does this very rarely. The latest date when the young birds that have been fed until the last one have left the nest is exactly September 7. The Mare, which is the youngest successful bird, left the nest on August 18.
